The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister
05.06.2002

Today at Kadriorg, President Arnold Rüütel and Prime Minister Siim Kallas at their traditional Wednesday-meeting discussed how Estonia's work towards the European Union has advanced. First of all, the President was interested in progress made in drafting legistation.

According to the Prime Minister no obstacles to scheduled progress of the accession talks held with the European Union were caused by Estonia. However, disagreements concerning taxation did exist between the European Commission and some member states of the Union.

The President took interest in to what extent our government agencies, while channelling EU supports, take account of the applications of Estonian counties and the regional needs. The same topic was under discussion also at the Head of State's yesterday's meeting with county governors. The Prime Minister admitted that, so far, the use of funds had been decided on the basis of branch interests, but preference should be given to projects drafted considering priorities of counties. Yet, at present, the interests of counties were represented by the Minister of Regional Affairs in the so-called Committee of Phare-Ministers.

Since the Prime Minister had been unable to participate in the session of the National Defence Council on June 03, the issues having been discussed then were touched upon at today's meeting too. Further, the President wanted to hear the Prime Minister's opinion of and to get more information about the service record of the candidate proposed for chief of general staff.
