The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister
22.05.2002

President Arnold Rüütel at his traditional Wednesday-luncheon at Kadriorg today discussed with Prime Minister Siim Kallas possibilities to further regional development in Estonia.

The Prime Minister advised the Head of State of possibilities to integrate European Union's structural funds into solving Estonia's regional problems – an issue which had been discussed by the Cabinet already. While doing this, the Prime Minister, as the key problem, brought up the Estonian capability to draw up suitable projects and to co-finance them.

In President's opinion, Estonia had to and was able to allocate budgetary funds also on its part, since this would enable to put regional policy actually into operation, thus reducing the regional differences. In this way, also new jobs could be created for local residents and the public revenue would grow.

The same subject was under discussion at President's this day's meeting with Minister of Regional Affairs Toivo Asmer as well. They also talked about summoning the President's Academic Council to discuss the issues of regional policy and local development in this circle.
