The President of the Republic attended a scientists' roundtable

President Arnold Rüütel today attended a roundtable of scientistst from Baltic Sea Countries where harmonization of agricultural policies with social, economic and environmental sustainability was under discussion.

The President addressed to the roundtable his opening words dealing with the main problems of Estonian agriculture, forestry and environmental protection in the course of the last 15 years. In addition, the Head of State forecasted possible developments in the mentioned areas over the coming decade. Among other things the President underlined the need to combine conservation with principles of organic farming in order to preserve the types of cultivated landscape near to the Estonians' heart: meadows covered by scattered trees, juniper groves etc..

The proposition of President Rüütel found the support of the participants of the rountable. They suggested that the Estonian Head of State took charge of working out a relevant programme of the European Union and this idea be presented to the Congress of European Agriculture scheduled for September in Estonia.

In the roundtable, drawing up a corresponding project of the European Union, Swedish, German, Polish, Lithuanian and Estonian scientists have participated so far but, on the suggestion of the Lund University in charge of the issue, in future other Baltic Sea Countries will be involved as well. The present conference was organized by the Institute of National Development and Cooperation. Next time, the roundtable will gather in September in Poznan.
