15.05.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg hosted his traditional Wednesday-luncheon for Prime Minister Siim Kallas.

As the key issue of their discussion, the Head of State broached the situation with the eastern border of Estonia having been inspected by him last week. President Rüütel acknowledged the Border Guard's priorities and accomplishments so far but noted, at the same time, that in several sections their working conditions needed to be brought up to date. The President announced that he would submit his observations to the Prime Minister in writing. The Prime Minister assured that the Government intended to allocate funds for refurbishing the border guard stations, and that the Government also would take into account the rest of President's propositions.

Subsequently, the Prime Minister briefed the Head of State on the developments in the process of European integration and on the bills being prepared by the Government. Prime Minister Kallas also presented Estonia's position for negotiating the energy issue with the European Union which had been approved by the Government yesterday.
