President Arnold Rüütel today attended a ceremony carried out in the airfield of the Ämari Air Base of the Estonian Air Force, where he presented the air base with a flag. Today, the Air Force celebrated the fifth anniversary of its re-establishment.
Like in his speech delivered at the International Security Conference "Forum Balticum" last week in Tartu, the Head of State also today, addressing the personnel of the Air Force, emphasized the need to become aware of and to prevent security risks. "For Estonia, while building up its system of national defence, there is only one decisive factor to minimize possible losses of civilian population," the President said.
The flag of the air base was consecrated by the Chief Chaplain of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Tõnis Nõmmik. The flag was donated to the air base by the Estonian Association of Journalists, which in this way repeated the act of donating a flag to the School of the Air Force on June 1, 1940. Back then the flag was handed over by President Konstantin Päts at the Aerodrome of Lasnamäe.
