14.05.2002

President Arnold Rüütel this morning at Kadriorg met with Ukraine's Foreign Minister Anatoli Zlenko.

At the meeting, both the Estonian Head of State and the Ukrainian Foreign Minister voiced the conviction that the development of relations between Estonia and Ukraine was mutually beneficial, and talked about the prospects on that score. Anatoli Zlenko put forward the interest of his country in Estonian investments and Estonia participating in the privatisation process going on in Ukraine. President Rüütel noted that Estonia was willing to pass on to Ukraine its experience gained in the accession process to the European Union. The Head of State also touched upon plans to lay out a transport corridor between the Baltic and the Black Sea. The President's proposals were approved in full by his counterpart.

Both sides highlighted the strong contractual basis forming the firm foundation of the relationship between our two countries. Further, active participation of the Ukrainian ethnic minority in the local life was acknowledged.

Foreign Minister Zlenko confirmed Ukraine's support to the Baltic States' accession to NATO and Ukraine being content if the relevant invitation should be presented next autumn in Prague.

The Foreign Minister delivered to President Rüütel greetings and an invitation from the President of Ukraine, Leonid Kutšma. "Let us hope that your visit will give the development of relations between our countries a fresh impetus," Anatoli Zlenko said. President Rüütel thanked for the invitation and expressed the hope that the visit could be made this very year.
