The President of the Republic congratulated the mothers
12.05.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today at the Estonia Concert Hall congratulated the mothers of Estonia on Mother's Day.

"Already before coming to this world a child needs a healthy, cheerful mother and a safe home. A child must feel in good time that it is welcomed to Estonia. We are a very small nation and children for us are very welcome indeed. However, I think that welcoming alone is not enough," the President said addressing the mothers.

The Head of State asked the listeners if we - while developing the Estonian state - had not forgotten that, in the first place, we had to think about the generations following us. If for our families, it was harder and harder to make both ends meet then less and less children would be born to Estonia, even if they were most welcome here. Nevertheless, the President was hopeful: "We are ever more appreciating the seriousness of the situation, and therefore, I would like to be confident that the noble idea of Dr Aino Järvesoo of supporting every child with one thousand Estonian kroons a month came true. I would like to believe that our politicians can be realistic and magnanimous."

This afternoon at Kadriorg, the President and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel will host a coffee party for the mothers of large families. A group photo will be taken of the gathering.

In the morning, President Arnold Rüütel took part in a public action of cleaning the Kadriorg park and planting trees, where he at the Pillapalu clearing instead of old damaged larches planted young larches reared on the island of Saaremaa.
