President Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg presented Wladislaw Bartoszewski, the former Foreign Minister of Poland, with a I Class Order of the Cross of St. Mary's Land, which had been conferred on him for his services to Estonia on the occasion of our Independence Day.
The President expressed his delight at having the chance to thank Mr Bartoszewski for his persistent work for the sake of a free and homogeneous Europe, having lasted for many decades, just on this day on Europe's Day. "Although you as an imprisoned dissident had for many times to suffer from repressions by tyrannical regimes - it all could not break your will founded on deep humane values. Without this kind of will there had been no changes in Poland, but the changes in Poland were in turn catalyst for changes in whole Europe," President Rüütel said addressing Wladislaw Bartoszewski.
The fresh chevalier, just like the Estonian Head of State, voiced his conviction that in a few years time Poland and Estonia would be productive partners both in NATO and in the European Union. "I would like Poland to join the European Union together with the Baltic States, for it would be a particular pleasure to do it in a good company," Wladislaw Bartoszewski noted.
