The President of the Republic received the Ambassadors of El Salvador and Macedonia
09.05.2002

Today at noon, President Arnold Rüütel at the Kadriorg Presidential Palace received the Ambassador of El Salvador, Byron Fernando Larios Lopez, who came to present his credentials.

The President at the meeting noted that Estonia and El Salvador had many similar features: being small maritime countries we oftentimes had been hit by the whirlwinds of history. ''Estonia and El Salvador are making efforts to develop their societies and to increase people's wellbeing in the complicated conditions of globalization. These efforts will bear fruit only if we promote international cooperation and learn from each other's experience,'' the President said.

At the meeting, the need to advance bilateral trade, economic, and cultural ties between Estonia and El Salvador was recognized. According to President Rüütel, the friendly relations between our two countries gave grounds for hope that we would succeed in this.

Today the President also received the credentials of the Ambassador of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Martin Trenevski. Talking about the ties between our two countries, it was noted jointly that the contacts between Estonia and Macedonia had progressed significantly over the last years.

According to President Rüütel, Estonia was following the events in Macedonia with interest and welcomed its aspirations to integrate into Europe. ''Macedonia's success definitely is success for all European countries since stability and wellbeing in the heart of the Balkans means stability for the whole of our continent,'' the President said.

At the meeting, also the co-operation between our countries in the field of culture, education and sports, as well as the economic and trade relations, which need a contractual basis for further development, were under discussion.
