The President of the Republic is at the eastern border
06.05.2002

The President of the Republic is at the eastern borderThis morning, the President flew to Narva to inspect the activities of the Border Guard Region of Ida-Viru. The Director General of the Board of Border Guard, Harry Hein, briefed the Head of State on the activities and problems of the Estonian Border Guard, and gave an overview of the statutory texts regulating border guard`s activities as well as of the tools of their trade. According to the Director General, the efficiency of border guard's activities is affected by insufficient funding. Technical devices and vehicles at the disposal of the border guard are to a large extent out-dated: for example, the age of their off-road vehicles is on the average 14 years. Out of the six border guard stations in the Region of Ida-Viru only one has a new building and in quite a lot of them the border guards have to work in very bad conditions.

In the Border Guard Region of Ida-Viru the President visited the border point of Narva and the border guard stations of Narva, Punamäe and Vasknarva. Commenting on his impressions, President Rüütel said that the border guards had done a very good job and stabilized the situation at the eastern border of Estonia. However, in President`s estimation, the state had not been able to earmark sufficient funds for bringing the working conditions of the border guards up to date.

Late in the afternoon, the Head of State headed for visiting the Border Guard Region of Peipsi.
