The President of the Republic thanked young historians

President Arnold Rüütel with his letters of thanks acknowledged the prizewinners of a students' historical research competition.

At the conference having taken place today in the big hall of the Ministry of Education in Tartu, the best participants of the competition in addition to a letter of thanks signed by the President received as award a book, and presented their research papers. The authors of the first six research works and their instructors were awarded with a cash prize by the President's Cultural Foundation.

107 pupils had sent their research papers to the competition. To the today's conference had been invited participants of the competition, their instructors and guests. At the junior high school level, two second prizes were awarded: to Kätlin Pahk from the Are Basic School and to Vivika Halapuu, Kadri Kann and Jane Peda from the Ülenurme High School. Romet Eensoo from the Türi High School got the award for the third place. At the high school level, Indrek Must from the Hugo Treffner High School placed first, Mari-Leen Tammela from the Tallinn French Lycée second and Hiie Nõlvak from the Rakvere High School third. President Arnold Rüütel wished the young historians clear sight for analysing and evaluating the experience of our people's past.

Later a discussion chaired by the President and attended by representatives of the Körber Foundation, the German Embassy, the Estonian History Teachers' Association and members of the jury took place. The Director of the Körber Foundation, Dr Wolf Schmidt, promised to support the competition also in future. The participants noted that the interest in history among the Estonian students was great, the competition had lived up to its objective, and discussed possible subject areas of further competitions. Both the President and the others found that next year the subject could be connected with the child and childhood.

The patron of the students' competition on historical research, which in Estonia took place for the third time, is the President of the Republic.The competition was carried out by the Estonian History Teachers' Association and supported by the Körber Foundation which has helped to organize similar competitions in many European countries.
