The Presidents of the Baltic States and the Czech Republic met in Prague

At noon today in Prague, Estonian President Arnold Rüütel, Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga and Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus met with President of the Czech Republic Václav Havel.

Václav Havel reminded his guests of an analogous meeting in Prague 1994, and confirmed his intention to continue in the same spirit supporting aspirations of their countries. "Our meeting here today underscores that the NATO Summit in the autumn should present an invitation of accession to all three Baltic States," Havel noted. He emphasized that the forthcoming summit was going to be of historic importance providing basis for a completely new perception of the world and for the structure of security area."At the same time, it is vital that all nations could freely define their identity and establish ties with other communities based on the principle of equality."

All the four Heads of State participating in the meeting indicated that forming this kind of a new quality of the relations in the world produced a new level and possibilities of communication with Russia.

President Rüütel noted at the meeting that Estonia, already with restoring its independence, had defined returning home – to its area of culture, economy and security - as its priority.

President Rüütel thanked the Czech Republic and President Havel for their strong support both to the aspirations of Estonia and the other Baltic States, and to the co-operation between them. He noted that, in the course of this co-operation, joint defence projects had been created allowing to assure that we were not only consumers of security but also capable of creating it.

In the afternoon, the Presidents will participate in the forum "Our common future in the Atlantic Community" held by the Czech Institute for International Relations and Radio Free Europe.

The President of the Republic will return to Tallinn tonight.
