26.04.2002

President Arnold Rüütel this afternoon at Kadriorg received a granddaughter of Jaan Teemant, the one-time Head of State of the Republic of Estonia, and her family.

Jaan Teemant's grandchild Annely L. Tjemkes van Nieuwkoop, living in Holland, had come together with her husband and two sons to Kadriorg to see a commemorative plaque at the wall of the Presidential Palace, on which amidst the names of the former Heads of State also the name of Jaan Teemant is inscribed. President Rüütel asked the guests into his study. During their meeting, the President voiced his hope that bonds with descendants of the former Heads of State be lasting and that Estonia held the memory of their meritorious ancestors in honour.

Jaan Teemant was Head of State in the years 1925-1927 and in 1932. He was arrested on July 23, 1940, and obviously shot by NKVD in Tallinn, or he died in the Central Prison of Tallinn. According to other information, 1941 he was sentenced to ten years in prison camp and his fate thereafter is unknown. Both daughters of Jaan Teemant are dead by now.
