The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister
17.04.2002

President Arnold Rüütel met with Prime Minister Siim Kallas at their traditional Wednesday-lunch at Kadriorg today.

The Prime Minister informed the Head of State of the activities of the Government and of the issues discussed in the Cabinet the day before. The President voiced his support to the Government's position that in the supplementary budget funds should be earmarked for catering for pupils at basic schools and for pension raise, as well as for law enforcement, veterinary education and additional financing of local governments.

As stressed by the Head of State, in respect of the local governments it was necessary to balance out the disparities resulting from the present funding model. That would be enabled by partial allocation of financial resources, earmarked by the supplementary budget, through the fund for the support of counties.

According to Prime Minister Kallas concrete ideas and projects were lacking to raise the efficiency of regional policy. "Yet, one of the major prerequisites for the use of resources from the European Union's structural funds is an increase in government officials' expertise," the Prime Minister noted.
