The President of the Republic met the Minister of Finance

President Arnold Rüütel this evening at Kadriorg met the Minister of Finance, Harri Õunapuu, to discuss with him chances to provide extra funding for the activities of local governments and for regional development.

Minister Õunapuu informed the Head of State that in a draft supplementary budget having been concluded recently there were 120 million additional kroons earmarked for the local governments this year. Regarding the use of these funds, the President suggested to take into account the need to ease the governmental centralization and to instil in people the conviction that life in the Estonian countryside will endure.

At the meeting, possibilities to finance creation of new jobs in rural areas and wider usage of renewable resources were under discussion as well. The President and the Minister of Finance also spoke about providing the pupils with free food at school.
