| Press Releases | | | The President of the Republic met with the President of the European Parliament16.04.2002
President Arnold Rüütel, while meeting President of the European Parliament Pat Cox at Kadriorg today, assured that Estonia is preparing very seriously to join the European Union.
As noted by the President, Estonia is expecting to reach in the course of the accession talks a consensus on some problems of utmost importance, one of the most complicated ones concerning the agriculture. The President called the quotas offered to Estonia unrealistic, their basis going back to the years of a very low production level and thus, not meeting neither the norms of a healthy diet nor the present stand of our domestic consumption.
Pat Cox expressed his contentment with Estonia going to have observer status in the European Parliament and, by that, an opportunity to get acquainted with the decision-making process there. Both the President of the European Parliament and the President of Estonia declared unanimously that shared interests of small nations furthered the integration in Europe.
