The President of the Republic visited the Põlula Experimental Farm
15.04.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today acquainted himself with the organisation of agricultural research work and cattle breeding at the Põlula Experimental Farm in the County of Lääne-Virumaa. The Head of State was first of all interested in a test programme of the Institute of Animal Science of the Estonian Agricultural University for establishing the production capacity of different cattle breeds with a view to raise the economic efficiency of dairy farming.

The researchers at the Põlula Experimental Farm, on the basis of five test groups, are trying to establish the dependence of the milk yield and quality on the nutrition and breed of animals. The primary findings of the experiment, which started half a year ago, have shown that by means of appropriate feeding a yearly milk yield of 10 000 kg per cow can be reached, exceeding more than twice the present average in Estonia.

President Rüütel acknowledged the excellent results achieved at the experimental farm. "Although the agricultural production and science in Estonia have not been in favour for years already, they still have made progress thanks to inner resources created in the form of educational basis. We have to invest in research and education continuously for our future depends on them," the Head of State noted.

The Director of the Institute of Animal Science, Professor Olav Kärt, pointed out that although there was a direct correlation between the potential for production growth and the knowledge of employees, the funding and thus, the development of agricultural education and science, had constantly been reduced after they were subordinated to administration by the Ministry of Education.

As assured by the Minister of Agriculture, Jaanus Marrandi, for the next year the ministry led by him was pursuing for agricultural science more resources than this year and, in addition, the vocational education was one of the priorities of the incumbent government. The Ministry of Agriculture deems it necessary to make the number of students at agricultural educational establishments tally with the demand of the sector, and to motivate the studies by scholarships.
