The President of the Republic is at a conference on farming in Tartu
08.03.2002

President Arnold Rüütel this morning in Tartu addressed the participants of the conference "The Family Farm - the Foundation of Vitality of the Estonian People" in the assembly hall of the Estonian Agricultural University.

Referring to farming as one of the forms of enterprise the President noted: "In this field effieciency, investiveness and competitiveness are sounding as keywords more and more. In Estonia, like in many other countries, the proportion of those engaged in agriculture has been decreasing year after year, making up 5% at present. Thus, the major part of the modern production inevitably has intensive and hi-tec character. But this means that less and less rural people earn their livings by tillage and livestock rearing."

Answering the basic question of the conference – is there a place for the family farm in today's society - the President said that there certainly is. Apart from farming there are many other branches of production and services enabling to earn one's living in the countryside, and the importance of preserving the man-made landscape and keeping the countryside populated are not to be underestimated either.

"Due to its internal division of labour and learning by doing the family farm can be and is a superb environment of life for several generations," the President added.

The today's conference has been organized by the Academic Agricultural Society, the Estonian Association of Cultural Societies, the Central Union of Farmers and the Estonian Agricultural University.
