04.04.2002

The representative of the Holy See to Estonia Peter Stephan Zurbriggeni and the President Arnold RüütelPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the credentials from the representative of the Holy See to Estonia, Papal Nuncio Archbishop Peter Stephan Zurbriggen.

Archbishop Zurbriggen conveyed to the President greetings from Pope John Paul II and wished Estonia success in acceding to the European Union.

The President said that Estonia valued highly the role of His Holiness Pope John Paul II in spreading the message of peace and love across the world. President Rüütel also remembered warmly the visit of the Holy Father to Estonia in 1993, when the Estonians were deeply moved by his attention paid to and concern shown for our home country having recently restored its independence.

President Arnold Rüütel today also received the credentials of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Lebanon, Ahmed Ibrahim.

At the presentation of the credentials, the President noted that due to the escalation of the conflict in Middle East both Lebanon and the whole region are having troubled times, and that Estonia sees the only way out of the present situation in implementation of peaceful measures. As an Estonian contribution to securing peace in Middle East the Head of State mentioned the Estonian peace-keepers and observers who, in colours of the UN, have been present in the region already since the mid-1990s. The President voiced hope that these activities had been of help also to Lebanon.

According to the President Estonia was intending, after having become a member of the European Union, to expand the scope of its relations with Mediterranean countries, and that this would hopefully result in the contacts between Estonia and Lebanon strengthening.
