The President of the Republic met the Foreign Minister of Croatia
03.04.2002

The President Arnold Rüütel and Foreign Minister of Croatia Tonino PiculaPresident Arnold Rüütel and Foreign Minister of Croatia Tonino Picula, at their meeting today at Kadriorg, emphasized that Estonia and Croatia had several similarities and very good prerequisites for co-operation, as was the case also with other small states in Europe.

Our Head of State noted that in the homogeneous economic and security area, evolving on the territory stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean, it was necessary to take into account the interests of all nations, but particularly of small nations. "We want to belong to such a union in which all nations – regardless of their size – would be equal. Thus, against this background, in my view the mission of eurosceptics is to warn of possible national levelling," the President said.

The hope was voiced on both sides, that the relationship between Estonia and Croatia would extend beyond the political level to cover also the economy and contacts between people. Foreign Minister Picula thanked President Rüütel for his offer – considering Croatia's forthcoming talks with the European Union and harmonization of legislation - to use Estonia's respective experience.
