The President ended his tour of Estonia
28.03.2002

This afternoon, after having visited the Counties of Jõgeva and Võru and the Cities of Tartu and Pärnu, President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid returned from their tour of Central and South Estonia.

This morning in Pärnu, the President had a meeting with the leaders of local governments and entrepreneurs of the County of Pärnu, who raised the problem of funding the local governments on the basis of long-term agreements with the state. It also was deemed necessary to increase the agricultural quotas offered Estonia by the European Union, and to improve the readiness of Estonia to utilize the EU-supports.

The President agreed with the position of Toomas Kivimägi, the County Governor of Pärnu, that the ratio of the nighttime-price of the electricity to the daytime-price should be fixed for a longer period, so that the consumers could make well-founded investments.

President Rüütel extended the latter idea to cover the regional development and possibilities of the local governments to direct it, which also ought to be carried through in accordance with long-term plans.

At the opening of a new building of the Rehabilitation Centre Estonia, the President noted that the state should provide more funds for keeping and improving the health of its residents. The President put forward the idea that in such a state-of-the-art establishment like the given centre, expectant mothers, on state benefits, should be enabled to check their health status and, after giving birth to their babies, to have a good rest there together with their families.
