The President of the Republic started his tour at Põltsamaa

Today President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel started touring Central Estonia. In the morning at the bend of the river Põltsamaa, the President took part in a meeting to mark the 53rd anniversary of the March-deportation. In commemoration of the big losses of Estonian people, the President of the Republic laid a wreath at a memorial stone there. "We must not forget the events of the past, but it is time to forget animosities," the President said. At the meeting, also Margus Oro, the County Governor of Jõgeva, leaders of county's towns and communities, Captain Ants Nurk, the Chief of the Defence League's Jõgeva unit and Endel Kaur, the Chairman of the Jõgeva regional organisation of Repressed Persons Association, spoke in remembrance of those deported.

The President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel will continue their tour visiting the towns of Põltsamaa and Jõgeva and the communities of Kasepää and Pala, where the regional development and promotion of both local business activities and social life will be under discussion.
