The President of the Republic discussed with the President of Lithuania opportunities of co-operation between our two countries
22.03.2002

This morning in Vilnius, President Arnold Rüütel had a bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus.

The Heads of State expressed their contentment with the Estonian-Lithuanian relationship. However, they noted that there were many possibilities to strengthen our economic and cultural co-operation, and this - not only in bilateral terms but including also the other countries of the Baltic Sea region, in the first place Poland being the strategic partner of Lithuania.

As indicated by President Rüütel, completing on a top level the Via Baltica highway and the railway section Rail Baltica, which would connect the countries of our region, and linking together our power and gas networks as well, would mean a dream having existed already in 1920s coming true. Already in those days it was deemed important in the Baltic States to build a close relationship both with Poland and Finland.

According to President Adamkus, the Baltic region would have several economic advantages in the European Union, which could be realized by joint activities. Discussing the course of the accession talks with the European Union and the implementation of the common agricultural policy, the Presidents suggested that this process should be co-ordinated by a joint working team of the Baltic States.

The Lithuanian Head of State took an interest in bringing ID-cards into use in Estonia, because in Lithuania the same process has been actuated too. President Adamkus repeated his earlier invitation to President Rüütel to attend the celebration of the 750th Anniversary of the City of Klaipeda in August.

At noon, a meeting of the Presidents of Poland and the Baltic States will begin, where they will deal with the security policy in the Baltic Sea region and the defence co-operation between the Baltic States.

President Rüütel will return to Tallinn tonight.
