The President of the Republic attaches great importance to the regional co-operation
21.03.2002

President Arnold Rüütel is flying to Vilnius Friday morning, to discuss with Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus and Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski the security policy in the Baltic Sea region and the defence co-operation between the Baltic States.

The same subject, in the context of NATO enlargement, was also the focal point of talks during President Rüütel's recent state visit to Poland, where President Kwasniewski voiced his firm support to the admission of the Baltic States to NATO in the coming autumn.

Before his departure for Vilnius, President Rüütel noted that, in order to express more strongly the common interests of the region, it was very vital to build a closer co-operation both between the Baltic states and in the Baltic Sea region. In President's estimation, the common interests included not only the security and economic policy but also cultural, educational and scientific issues. "As the trends of economic development point to the increasing importance of the north-south-axis, Estonia endeavours to develop relations with both the Nordic Countries and the Central European countries lying southwards. In addition to our comparable historic heritage we are bound together with the latter by similar aspirations towards the European Union and NATO," the Head of State said.

Early in May, the Heads of State of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will meet the President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel, in Prague.
