The President of the Republic met with the Foreign Minister of Hungary

The President of the Republic met with the Foreign Minister of Hungary Janos MartonyiPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg met with the Foreign Minister of Hungary, Janos Martonyi, who is visiting Estonia. Their discussion focused on the bilateral relations between Estonia and Hungary, the enlargement and future of the European Union, and the accession of Estonia and the other Baltic States to NATO.

The Estonian Head of State and the Hungarian Foreign Minister voiced hopes that the questions, still open at the negotiations with the European Union, could be successfully solved and thus, the accession talks concluded this year. Foreign Minister Martonyi stressed that Hungary has consistently supported the invitation of Estonia and the other Baltic States as worthy applicants to join NATO this autumn. The Minister also explained the activities of the convention on the future of the European Union.

During the discussion also the co-operation between the Finno-Ugrian peoples and its prospects were touched upon. President Rüütel and Foreign Minister Martonyi deemed it necessary to continue building up a closer relationship between Estonia and Hungary, while furthering contacts in the fields of culture, education and economy. The President expressed hope that his state visit, going to take place at the invitation of the Hungarian President in the second half of the year, would substantially contribute to the advancement of ties with our kindred people in Hungary.
