The President of the Republic met the Minister of Agriculture
13.03.2002

This afternoon at Kadriorg, President Arnold Rüütel discussed with Minister of Agriculture Jaanus Marrandi the development trends of life in the Estonian countryside.

The Head of State took interest in possibilities to combine conservation of countryside with organic production of beef, mutton and milk. In estimation of the Minister of Agriculture, an approach like this coincides with attitudes of the European Union, according to which the intense production ought to be curbed, whereas the organic farming should be advanced and balanced development of rural regions and environmental care supported more than before.

The President and the Minister also talked about the future of higher education and vocational training in the field of agriculture. According to the Minister, the continuity in this area was not ensured, for every year only 300 young persons, instead of 500-700 needed, start studying or training agricultural professions.

At the meeting, also the issue of continuing the education of veterinarians at the Estonian Agricultural University came up. The President presented his position on the matter, shared by the Minister of Education, that the mentioned education was needed, to which the Minister of Agriculture agreed as well. The Head of State and the Minister also deemed it important that consultancy services – an essential auxiliary system for disseminating information and applying for agricultural supports – be strengthened.
