The President of the Republic had a meeting with the leaders of the Congress of the Country People
07.02.2002

This afternoon at Kadriorg, President Arnold Rüütel received the Board of the Congress of the Country People (Maarahva Kongress), who spoke of their expectations of the development of rural life.

As Tõnis Blank, the Co-Chair of the Board pointed out, the Congress of the Country People had, already last spring, considered it important to reach a national agreement on the future of rural life in Estonia. In his opinion, the questions of what does rural life depend on and what depends on the country people, demand fast answers.

President Rüütel thanked the Board of the Congress of the Country People for posing the question this way. Also, the Head of State pointed out that also minor and major entrepreneurs in the cities have emphasised the need to reach a national agreement, because permanent economic success is impossible without the balanced development of the society as a whole.

The President spoke of his plan to form several committees consisting of researchers and experts for the systematic analysis of different areas of life and factors of development, as well as for drawing up development schemes. One of the committees would deal with aspects of rural life, and the activities of all the committees in combination, as the Head of State said, could also lead to the national agreement.
