Finland supports Estonia on the EU negotiations
24.01.2002

This afternoon, Arnold Rüütel, the President of the Republic Estonia, had a meeting with Tarja Halonen, the President of the Republic of Finland, in the course of his one-day visit to Finland.

At the request of the Finnish President, the Estonian Head of State spoke of the formation of the new government coalition in Estonia; President Rüütel was pleased that all political parties represented in the Riigikogu had shown their constructive approach towards the change of government, and that the birth of the new coalition had, virtually, been a matter of days. Both Presidents were pleased to state that the new government that is soon taking office would continue to pursue the foreign policy priorities of Estonia and has promised to do its best for Estonia’s negotiations with the EU to come to a positive conclusion this year.

Tarja Halonen, the President of the Republic of Finland, was interested in the problems of Estonian oil shale power industry, especially its social aspects.

The Finnish Head of State reiterated that it is not governments, but nations and states that accede to the European Union. President Halonen confirmed Finland's continued support to Estonia’s accession to the European Union within the first circle of accession.

In the evening, the President of the Republic of Estonia will deliver a lecture at the joint meeting of the Paasikivi Society and the Tuglas Society at the Assembly Hall of Helsinki University.
