The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister of Denmark

The President of the Republic met with the Prime Minister of Denmark Anders Fogh RasmussenPresident Arnold Rüütel met with the Prime Minister of Denmark, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, this afternoon at Kadriorg. Their talks focussed on the enlargement of the European Union and possible accession of Estonia and the other Baltic States to NATO.

The Estonian Head of State expressed hope that the issues currently being negotiated with the European Union could soon be successfully resolved and thus, the membership negotiations concluded. Prime Minister Rasmussen voiced his optimism in view of the prospect to bring the negotiations to a successful conclusion just in the time when Denmark, in the second half of the year, will hold the presidency of the EU. The Prime Minister also noted that Denmark was fully supporting admission of Estonia and the other Baltic States to NATO this autumn.
During the discussion, the common agricultural policy of the European Union, supports to the agriculture in the EU, and the need to extend preferential treatment on sustainable manufacturing were touched upon as well.

President Rüütel and Prime Minister Rasmussen also talked about the relations between Estonia and Denmark both in the farther and in the recent history, and expressed hope that the relations between our two countries would grow closer than ever before.
