The President of the Republic hailed the Convention on the future of the European Union
28.02.2002

President Arnold Rüütel made a statement at Kadriorg today hailing the assembly of the Convention on the future of the European Union. Like the Head of State noted, the Convention will discuss how to shape the enlarging European Union in a way best according with the interests of the European peoples and states.

"For Estonia, a new era of our European integration starts with the Convention. As of today, the representatives of Estonia are involved in delineating Europe's future on an equal footing. This is a chance we are obliged to take advantage of actively," the President said. He judged it to be vital for Estonia that all countries and people are treated equally in Europe.

In President's estimation, the Convention will be able to perform its tasks if resting on opinions and attitudes prevailing in society. "The Estonian public should actively convey their views and interests to our representatives in the Convention," President Rüütel recommended.
