15.02.2002

During his tour today, President Arnold Rüütel familiarized himself with the development programme of Tallinn.

In the forenoon, the Head of State gained an overview of the plans for extending the downtown and the port area of the capital, got to know sports facilities at Rocca al Mare and visited the Tiit Sokk's basketball school. The President also was interested in computer tuition for the elderly at the Nõmme High School.

In the afternoon, President Rüütel familiarized himself with the activities of a language centre at the Läänemere High School, and the cable factory Amphenol situated at Lasnamäe.

Concluding the day, the Head of State said that he had been impressed by the sophisticated planning of the living environment in the capital and awareness of the social problems. "At the same time, I came to the conclusion that Tallinn will never be completed, for there are more plans than can be realized within a generation," the President noted.

The Head of State presented to Chairwoman of the City Council Maret Maripuu and Mayor Edgar Savisaar an invitation for dinner at Kadriorg, to resume talking over the issues arisen during the tour.
