President Arnold Rüütel is the patron of Estonian home decoration movement

The President of the Republic took over patronizing the Estonian home decoration movement from President Lennart Meri.

The President of the Republic with Mrs Ingrid Rüütel and President Lennart Meri with Mrs Helle Meri were visiting the Estonian Home Decoration Association today. The previous guardian of the home decoration idea, the initiator of the revival of the movement, Lennart Meri, was proclaimed honorary member of the Estonian Home Decoration Association and was presented with the highest award of the association – Badge of Distinction with Golden Leaves. President Meri passed on the honorary post of patron to President Rüütel.

Both the previous and the present Head of State expressed the opinion, that home decoration is important for every family and for the country alike. "It is not only a personal and national, but also a patriotic activity," President Rüütel noted.

The Chairman of the Central Board of the Home Decoration Association, Arvi Altmäe, said that in Estonia this tradition, supported by the then President Konstantin Päts, dates back to 1936. President Lennart Meri declared the first Home Decoration Year in his speech, delivered on Mother's Day 1997. According to a custom, the awards for the most beautiful homes are handed over prior to the Day of Victory.
