The President of the Republic is touring Tallinn today

President Arnold Rüütel, on suggestion of Mayor Edgar Savisaar, is touring the capital today.

In the morning in the City Hall, the President was welcomed by the Chairwoman of the City Council, Maret Maripuu, who thanked him for paying attention to the problems of local governments and added that the local governments, on their part, were supporting the President.

The Head of State also visited the building of Ühispank (Union Bank of Estonia), where he was greeted by the Vice-President of the Ühispank, Margus Schults.

The Deputy Head of the Board for Ecological Development and Planning, Hain Karu, presented to the Head of State the development plan of the City of Tallinn.

The President also familiarized himself with the course of extending the port area. The Chairman of the Board of Merko Ehitus Ltd, Toomas Annus, presented to the President plans for constructing a shopping centre adjoining the passenger port. Thereafter, the President visited sports and recreation facilities at Rocca al Mare.

The President also called at the Tiit Sokk's basketball school.

The Head of the City District Nõmme, Urmas Paet, and the Headmaster of the Nõmme High School, Heiti Aarna, welcomed the President at the Nõmme High School, where the Head of State made acquaintance with a computer class for the elderly. President Rüütel was interested in why the elderly are learning how to work a PC, and in how they can make use of their skills.

The Mayor of Tallinn, Edgar Savisaar, hosted a lunch in honour of the President of the Republic.

In the afternoon, the President of the Republic will also visit the language center of the Läänemere High School and the cable factory Amphenol, situated at Lasnamäe.
