The President of the Republic met representatives of the Estonian Rye Society
12.02.2002

The President of the Republic met representatives of the Estonian Rye SocietyMeeting representatives of the Estonian Rye Society today, President Arnold Rüütel said that bread grain and rye bread deserved more respect and support.

Members of the Estonian Rye Society are farmers, plant breeders, bread producers, arts people and public figures. Since its foundation two years ago, the society has made promotion for rye, a thousand-year-old cultivated plant.

Like the members of the society stressed at the meeting with the President, rye has several good qualities: used as food it keeps one healthy, and in the field it helps to control wild oat, a troublesome weed. Because of the aforesaid, in view of the society, the acreage under rye should be enlarged and, as a part of the programme of free board at school, every schoolchild should be offered at least one slice of rye bread a day.

The President noted that rye bread, like cornflower, is for the Estonians an essential national symbol. The Head of State thanked the Estonian Rye Society for preserving national values and developing rye growing.

President Rüütel has given his consent to be patron of the Estonian Rye Society.
