The President of the Republic ended his visit to Ida-Virumaa
30.01.2002

The President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel ended their two-day visit to Ida-Virumaa tonight.

At numerous meetings the entrepreneurs of the region brought out a great many problems which are slowing down economic advancement on both the local and the national level: shortage of trained manpower, exports to Russia being hampered by double tariffs, and a drop in competitiveness due to a rise in price of electricity.

But one of the distinctive features of Ida-Virumaa is that only four thousand Estonian-speaking children go to school in one of Estonia's largest counties. To this day, it has been a concern of local governments to provide them with education in mother tongue.

"Ida-Virumaa is our shared responsibility," President Rüütel said summing up impressions gathered during the two days. "Due to its hard history, this region deserves our particular attention today as well but, unfortunately, we tend to forget it in the capital."
