The President of the Republic returned from Saaremaa
11.01.2002

Tonight the President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel finished their county-visit to Saaremaa.

Both in his address to the annual conference of the seven major islands of the Baltic Sea and at the meetings during his visit the Head of State spoke out the thought that the unique environment on the islands is an asset, the value of which is constantly growing. Besides, according to President Rüütel, very hardworking, purposeful and optimistic people are living on the island of Saaremaa.

This morning, during his visit to the Kuressaare Vocational School and the College of the Tallinn Technical University, the President discussed with local school-leaders regional aspects of the educational system and bottlenecks in funding the vocational education. The visit was followed by an animated exchange of ideas with leaders of the local governments of Saaremaa pertaining to the development of Estonia as a well-balanced and democratic civil society. The questions put to the President concerned the revenues of the local governments and the appropriations from the state budget, the expediency of an administrative reform and unilevel system of the local government, chances for a balanced social and regional development and many other issues of the kind.

In the forenoon the President visited the Brewery of Saaremaa and discussed thereafter with the leaders of the Saarte Liinid Ltd. possibilities to build a port at the western coast of Saaremaa. “The port is needed not only for Saaremaa but also for Estonia as a whole,” the President emphasized.
