The President of the Republic is on the island of Saaremaa

President Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel started a county-visit to Saaremaa today.

First, they visited the Muhu Basic School, where the school family offered the guests a musical welcome. The Head of State spoke out his wish that the island of Muhu would also in future bring forth well-known scientists, seafarers and representatives of other occupations. During the meeting with leaders of the school and the local government, the head of the municipality Muhu, Ain Saaremäel, raised the problem of funding the local governments. The President was interested in the state of local economic activities and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel in possibilities of the municipality to support the local folk culture.

After visiting Muhu, the President headed for the ancient Maasi castle of the Teutonic order making en route a stop at the schoolhouse of Orissaare where a large number of children had gathered to greet the Head of State. Thereafter, a tour of the Saaremaa Liha- ja Piimatööstus (a factory of meat and dairy products) followed, during which the President discussed with its chairman of the board, Ahti Viilup, the chances of increasing the efficiency of production and finding new markets.

At a meeting with producers of agricultural products of Saaremaa who, at the same time, own the local processing industries, the Head of State paid tribute to their achievements advancing the co-operative production. “Your industries are capable of manufacturing extremely competitive products. You have been able to achieve this due to the good planning of your activities and preserving the right farmer`s spirit,”said the President and encouraged the members of the co-operative to face the future hopefully.

Answering a question about the future of the agricultural education and science, asked by the chairman of the council of the Kaarma municipality Urmas Lehtsalu, who is a farmer himself, the Head of State said that he was confident of survival of our Agricultural University. The President was asked questions about forming a new government as well.

Tonight, President Rüütel will address the participants of the annual conference of the Association B7 of the Baltic Sea islands. Tomorrow, the Head of State will familiarize himself with the Kuressaare Vocational School and the Brewery of Saaremaa and, in addition, meet the leaders of the local governments of Saaremaa. Mrs Ingrid Rüütel will visit the town theatre of Kuressaare and an art studio, and have a meeting with leaders of cultural affairs of the Kaarma municipality.
