The President of the Republic met the leaders of parliamentary parties
09.01.2002

The President of the Republic today met the leaders of all political parties represented in the Riigikogu to find out their views on forming a new government.

During the meetings were under discussion both the possibilities to form a new government coalition and the option to call an extraordinary general election.

From the party leaders met by the Head of State, in favour of an extraordinary election were Chairman of the Center Party Edgar Savisaar, Chairman of the People`s Union of Estonia Villu Reiljan and Chairman of the Pro Patria Union Mart Laar. In estimation of the leader of the Reform Party, Siim Kallas, an extraordinary election would be unfavourable for Estonia. This opinion was shared by Deputy Chairman of the Moderates Eiki Nestor, Chairman of the United People`s Party of Estonia Viktor Andrejev, Chairman of the Russian Baltic Party Sergei Ivanov, Chairman of the Estonian Social Democratic Labour Party Tiit Toomsalu and the leader of the party New Estonia, Ülo Nugis.

The President of the Republic will continue his political consultations with a view to forming a new government next week, while meeting representatives of the factions of the Riigikogu.

“These talks involve very serious responsibility, because if we do not succeed in forming a new government now, the people will be even more disappointed in state authority,” the Head of State said.
