The President of the Republic met the leader of the Estonian TV08.01.2002
Today President Arnold Rüütel received the Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Television Aare Urm to discuss with him the issue of financing the public television.
The Head of State expressed his desire that ETV ensured continuous production of its programs focusing to a greater extent than so far on performance of the informing and educational functions of the public media. As one of the possibilities to reach this goal the Head of State suggested to involve in the production of programs ministries and other government agencies, and similarly county- and local governments who, in this way, would get better chances to communicate with Estonian society. I do recommend all the authorities to propagate intellectual values using the public broadcasting and the appropriations from the state budget. At the same time, educating people and analysing problems in broadcasts would enable the public television to fulfil its tasks in the best possible way, President Rüütel noted.
During the meeting, they also touched upon the item of broadcasting the gala concert and the reception to be hosted by the President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Estonia. The Head of State reiterated his wish, expressed already earlier, that the Estonian people should see the gala concert as live broadcast, yet the reception should be recorded by ETV and broadcast later in proper time. President Rüütel emphasized: It is my firm standpoint, that people must have the possibility to watch live one of the best Estonian athletes participating in an Olympic event, this being at the same time a most excellent chance to present to the world our country and people.
