The President of the Republic received the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan

The Ambassador of Pakistan Mr Shahid A. Kamal and president Arnold RüütelToday at noon President Arnold Rüütel received in the Kadriorg Presidential Palace the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Pakistan Mr Shahid A. Kamal who came to present his credentials.

The President said at the meeting that even though the history of diplomatic relations between Estonia and Pakistan had not been long, the relations were developing in a spirit of goodwill and with respect for each other`s interests. He also spoke out his conviction that with the new Ambassador assuming his office, the Estonian-Pakistani relationship which had been stable so far would experience further advances.

The President expressed his appreciation of Pakistan's supportive role and principled attitude in the fight against terrorism. “Prevention of conflicts and sufferings in our globalizing world is undoubtedly an objective we are jointly striving for,” President Rüütel said.

The President of the Republic stressed the need to further develop bilateral trade, economic and cultural relations between Estonia and Pakistan. According to the Ambassador there is a good potential to co-operate in the field of textile and leather industries, and in the sphere of biotechnology as well.
