19.12.2001

Yesterday evening the President of the Republic gave a Christmas dinner to the leaders of the parties represented in the Riigikogu.

The dinner was attended by Villu Reiljan from the People`s Union, Mart Nutt from the Pro Patria Union, Edgar Savisaar from the Center Party, Eiki Nestor from the Moderates, Viktor Andrejev from the United People`s Party of Estonia, Tiit Toomsalu from the Social Democratic Labour Party of Estonia, and Ülo Nugis from the party New Estonia.

At the beginning of the meeting the President noted that meetings of that kind with representatives of the parties should take place regularly.

At the meeting the developments of the last ten years, the political situation in Estonia, and the international situation were discussed. The President stressed that in our domestic policy, just the same way like in the arena of foreign policy, no alternatives to co-operation exist.. Even in the case if dissensions at the moment should seem to be founded on principle and impossible to overcome, in the joint interests of the Estonian state and people, we have to continue seeking compromises. “Do not let us forget that the democracy is put on trial primarily just in critical situations,” the President said.

The representatives of the parties thanked the Head of State and were sure that meetings like this are necessary and should take place in future as well.
