The President of the Republic met the Prime Minister
12.12.2001

At his meeting with the Prime Minister today the President of the Republic brought up two issues.

First the President was interested in how the situation in Tallinn might affect the government coalitions chances to hold out. The President asked the Prime Minister to seriously weigh up all the possible developments. The political situation in Estonia has been stable in recent times and it has enabled us to keep to the policy of balanced budget, and to succeed in the process of accession to both the European Union and NATO. Eventual Cabinet crisis would certainly influence the given developments, and therefore the Head of State holds it crucial that all steps intended to be taken were discussed in detail with all the parties concerned. The President of the Republic emphasized that decisions should be made first of all considering the stable development of the Estonian state. The Prime Minister affirmed that the state budget would be approved and we were going to have a peaceful Christmas time in Estonia.

Further the President expressed his anxiety about the sales agreement of the minority shares of the Narva power stations, though not taken effect yet. During his term of office many organizations, individuals and scientists have turned to President Rüütel requesting to consider once again, if this transaction was expedient. In this context and for the purpose of assuming his stance on this particular issue, the President of the Republic asked the Prime Minister questions he expects to be answered before too long. The President and the Prime Minister agreed that the assets of Eesti Põlevkivi could not be offered as collateral for taking up a loan to renovate the power stations of Narva Elektrijaamad Ltd., nor could the state on its part be a guarantor of the loan.
