Mrs Ingrid Rüütel earned the title "Friend of the Press 2001"

Mrs Ingrid Rüütel earned the title Friend of the Press 2001.Mrs Ingrid Rüütel received this afternoon in Kadriorg representatives of the Estonian Newspaper Association who handed to her a gold-colored megaphone which accompanies the title of the most press-friendly public figure of the year.

The Editor in Chief of the Äripäev Mr Igor Rõtov said that Mrs Ingrid Rüütel was the surpriser of the year for, in the course of eight years, she was the first female person to be awarded the title of the Friend of the Press. Those who had elected her the most press-friendly public figure, recognized her openness being the spouse of the President, and her willingness to throw in a word on what is going on in Estonia and the world. They also noted that Ingrid Rüütel had started to set new trends in relations between the Institution of the President and the public.

The Managing Director of the Newspaper Association Mr Tarmu Tammerk said that the megaphone was a piece of handicraft made by artisans of the Kuldgraal, and this in its turn, could be linked to Mrs Rüütel“s trade.

Mrs Rüütel thanked the journalists for the present and promised to stay press-friendly. She is expecting the attitude of the press towards her to remain friendly and understanding in future too. Mrs Rüütel expressed her hope that she would never earn the title of the Foe of the Press.

The event was also attended by Mr Priit Hõbemägi, Editor in Chief of the Eesti Päevaleht, Ms Tiina Kaalep, Managing Editor of the Eesti Ekspress, Mr Väino Koorberg, Editor in Chief of the SL Õhtuleht, Mr Toomas Mattson, Deputy Editor in Chief of the Postimees and Mr Tõnis Tõnisson, Editor in Chief of the Nädaline, the paper of the County of Raplamaa.
