The President of the Republic received the Ambassador of the United States of America

The Ambasssador of the United States of America Mr Joseph M. DeThomas and President Arnold RüütelPresident Arnold Rüütel received today in Kadriorg the Ambasssador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America Mr Joseph M. DeThomas who came to present his credentials.

At the meeting were under discussion the bilateral relations between the two countries in the area of economic and security policy. The President emphasized that for Estonia the United States were one of the most important partnes of political and economic co-operation. The main objective of developing our bilateral relations is to achieve in our foreign and security policy as well as in economy mutually beneficial goals for both of our countries.

The President expressed his support to the fight against terrorism. “For Estonia to stand jointly with other nations in defence of the free, democratic, creative, and open scheme of society is a matter of course,” the President said.

The Ambassador acknowledged Estonian latest progress and developments. While preparing to accede to NATO Estonia had done a good job but the preparations should be carried on for, the final decisions will be made at the end of 2002. The Ambassador said that this day’s world differed substantially from the world we had three months ago and voiced his hopes that the co-operation arisen from combatting terrorism would develop successfully. The President thanked the United States for their support to Estonia’s accession to NATO. “Estonia on its part will do its best to contribute to the security in its neighbouring regions and via international co-operation and relations with its allies in farther regions too,” the President assured.
