06.12.2001

Today at noon President Arnold Rüütel received in the Kadriorg Presidential Palace the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China Mrs Cong Jun who came to present her credentials.

The Ambassador of China assured when presenting her credentials that the relations between Estonia and China were excellent and she also conveyed to President Rüütel personal greetings from the President of China Jiang Zemin.

The President of the Republic thanked China for its support to the sovereignty and political choices of Estonia. At the meeting co-operation in the field of railway transport between Estonia and China, eventual transit of Chinese goods via Estonian ports as well as the cultural exchange between Estonia and China were discussed. The President expressed his hopes that the cultural co-operation between Estonia and China would develop successfully as it had been agreed in the programme for the bilateral cultural co-operation.

Today in Kadriorg President Rüütel received also the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey Mr Ömer Altugi, the first Ambassador of Turkey to be residing in Estonia after the restoration of the independence of Estonia, who presented his credentials.

The President said that the year soon ending had been very significant for the Estonian-Turkish ties. He also voiced his delight that the successful development of diplomatic relations between Estonia and Turkey resulted in reciprocal opening of their Embassies in both of the countries, and expressed his hopes that this would further strengthen the ties between the two countries.

With respect to the foreign policy, President Rüütel brought out the similarity between the Estonian and Turkish endeavours: good relations with neighbouring countries, stable development of the society and safeguarding peace and security in the whole World.

The Ambassador of Turkey to Estonia Mr Ömer Altugi noted that the Turkish support to the aspirations of Estonia to become a member state of NATO was quite natural, security being the most important issue for every country.

At the meeting the promotion of cultural and educational relations between Estonia and Turkey was also touched upon. President Rüütel said that there had been a profound interest in the Turkish language and culture in Estonia already long ago. These days many educational establishments had started with promising co-operation in the field of language studies and regarding the exchange of students.
