The President of the Republic met the Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden

President Arnold Rüütel had a meeting with Lena Hjelm-Wallén, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sweden, in the presidential palace of Kadriorg today.

Lena Hjelm-Wallén congratulated Arnold Rüütel on his being elected the President, and recognised Estonia's success in acceding to the European Union. The President in his turn thanked Sweden for the assistance given to Estonia and for the support during the last ten years.

On the meeting, environment protection co-operation between Estonia and Sweden was discussed. President Rüütel pointed out that Estonia tries to create the preconditions for attracting foreign investments also to remoter parts of the country, and expressed his hope that in the future, foreign investors, including the foreign investors from Sweden, will give their attention not only to Tallinn, but also to other districts of Estonia. Speaking of the intensifying co-operation within the European Union, Lena Hjelm-Wallén said that Estonia's accession to the European Union will increase the role of the Nordic countries in the European Union even further.
