The President of the Republic opened the seminar of the Roundtable of National Minorities

President Arnold Rüütel opened the seminar of the Roundtable of National Minorities at the Sakala Centre yesterday; the seminar focused on the resultativity of the work of the Roundtable, delved into the national minorities policy in Estonia and discussed the integration programme of Tallinn that is going to be completed soon. In his speech, the President thanked all the Ministers that had addressed the issue of national minorities in independent Estonia, and all the members of the Roundtable who have done their best in the last seven and a half years to contribute considerably to the shaping and correction of the national minorities policy of Estonia.

On the seminar, a presentation on the legislation concerning national minorities was made by Mikhail Stalnukhin, who spoke of the co-operation practice and resultativity of the Roundtable and the Riigikogu committees. The sociologist Klara Hallik spoke of the understanding and development of the problems related to national minorities in Estonia after the year 1991. Development possibilities of the co-operation between the cultural societies of the national minorities and the Roundtable were addressed by leaders of the cultural societies of the national minorities Lydia Kõlvart and Jaak Prozes. Active discussion followed each presentation.

Leivi Sher spoke of the integration programme of the city of Tallinn that is going to be completed soon. This is the first regional integration programme in Estonia. The programme was discussed in four working groups, focusing on the socio-economic, the educational, and the political aspects of the programme and the role of the officials and the third sector in the implementation of the programme. The seminar participants decided to give their wholehearted support to the shaping and implementation of the integration programme of the capital, and the Roundtable will be following the process closely.
