The President of the Republic met with the Legal Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu25.10.2001
President Arnold Rüütel met with the members of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu today in the Kadriorg Presidential Palace. There was an exchange of thoughts at tea table over several topical problems of legal policy and their possible solutions. Members of the Committee informed the President of important changes taking place in the next few years in the field of penal law, administrative law, civil law and procedural law that will require thorough retraining of all judges and justice officials.
Problems of the independence of courts and judges were talked about during the meeting in the light of the Courts Act currently in the legislative proceeding of the Riigikogu, also issues related to the investigation of crimes committed by policemen and officials. There was a lively exchange of thoughts on the subject of political and legal responsibility of higher state officials.
The Head of State and the members of the Legal Affairs Committee agreed on the continuation of similar meetings.
