06.11.2001

The President of the Republic had bilateral meetings with the presidents of Poland and Moldova in Warsaw today.

At the meeting, President Arnold Rüütel thanked the President of Poland for comprehensive support to the strivings of Estonia to become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, as Poland as one of the three newest members of NATO has always shared without hesitation its experience with Estonia. The President of Poland assured that the support would also continue in the future, till all three Baltic countries have become full members of NATO.

In addition to the subject of the NATO enlargement, the opportunities of the two countries for getting an invitation to the European Union soon and the current situation of the accession talks were discussed as well as the bilateral relations between Estonia and Poland.

The President of the Republic of Poland gave an invitation to President Rüütel to come to a state visit to Poland at an earliest suitable time.

During the meeting with the President of Moldova, President Rüütel and President Voronin acknowledged that the relations between the two countries are good, and the President of Moldova gave Arnold Rüütel an invitation to visit Moldova.

They discussed also the situation in Transdnestria, and the President of Moldova thanked Estonia for its strong support to Moldova in the issue of taking alien forces out of the territory of the country.

Accession of Moldova to the World Trade Organisation in July this year has, however, created new opportunities for the development of trade between Estonia and Moldova, found the presidents.
