President said that although Estonia and the Netherlands are not direct neighbours there are very close political, economic and cultural relations.

According to Wim Kok the Netherlands have high regard for the relations between the two countries but he also mentioned that there are definite possibilities to make them even more active. “It is in our common interest that Estonia is admitted to the North Atlantic Alliance and to the European Union as quickly as possible. It is beneficial not only for Estonia but for the whole Europe as it will strengthen security, stability and solidarity“, said Wim Kok. According to the Prime Minister the enlargement negotiations have been so successful for Estonia that the country may finish the preparations by the end of next year and become a full member of the European Union already in 2004.

President Rüütel thanked the Netherlands for the assistance and advice that have helped Estonia follow the negotiations timetable. The Netherlands Prime Minister assured that the Netherlands support Estonia in agricultural projects as well as in all other projects. Wim Kok also said that the agricultural policy of the European Union has changed. Yet there are still big changes to come, aimed at creating the conditions that would not harm the interests of the farmers of the member states or of the candidate countries.
